Sand in the Suitcase

Sand in the Suitcase

A sad find
Sand in the suitcase
Just enough grit to unsettle the mind
Warm my peeling face

A sad find
Sand in the suitcase
Just a trace of it reminds
Me of a bright and pasteled place

A sad find
Sand in the suitcase
Causing a yearning rewind
Just enough to fill my nails, not enough to waste

A sad find
Sand in the suitcase
To strum the pangs, darken the welcome back signs
Counting down to the next visit, a marathon race

So…
I lace my still tanned fingers
Gently rub the grit between
Let memories linger
See the changing landscape scene
Relish the whooshing breezes
The sound of just life abounds
Relax until the need to flee no longer seizes
Salt on my lips, ocean sounds

A bucketlist check off destination
called my bluff
a wished upon vacation
made the year’s losses less rough

Those blues a shade unknown before
Stillness and vastness unheard of
Remain in the suitcase still at the door
For California love
